Cultivating Medicinal Herbs

Goldenseal

HYDRASTIS CANADENSIS is commonly known as Goldenseal.  This medicinal plant is a slow growing perennial native to hardwood forests in the Eastern USA.  Native Americans, well aware of its medicinal benefits, included the plant in their diets and shared this knowledge with early settlers who quickly began using it.  In 1997, Hydrastis canadensis was placed on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species Appendix List II, due to it's over collection in the wild.

Two Creeks is in its fourth year of cultivating Hydrastis canadensis, in conjunction with a cooperative of growers across the state.  One acre of formerly idle forestland has been prepared for planting; one forth acre is planted each year, nurturing approximately 10-12,000 plants.  October is the month for planting and harvesting Hydrastis.  Creating the natural habitat was not too difficult; farming in the month of October in the shade works for us, and we would be delighted if our visitors wanted to participate in this activity!

Goldenseal has rightfully been called "God's gift to mankind";  it is truly one of the most useful herbs known.  Participating in the USDA National Organic Program, our plants and surroundings flourish in a chemical free natural environment.  Wander through the gardens and learn more about the medicinal properties, conservation, folklore, natural health care, and the proper use of products made from grower raw material on our medicinal herb farm tour

“If delight may provoke men’s labour, what greater delight is there than to behold the earth apparelled with plants… The principle delight is in the minde, singularly enriched with the knowledge of these visible things, setting forth to us the invisible wisdome and admirable workmanship of almighty God."   -  John Gerard, 1633, The Herbal
