HERB PLANTS and PRODUCTS

Naturally grown & chemical free in everything we do ... all of our plants are grown in compliance with the National Organic Program certification standards. We use only OMRI listed pest & weed controls, and mostly tidy our "Garden of Weeden" by hand. We choose to use only certified organic and/or natural seed, mulch and fertilizers that bring forth healthy, hardy plants.
Georgia's growing season is ideal for cultivating our native & medicinal plants and herbs outdoors, not in the greenhouse, where they can mature into strong, enduring, and spirited individuals. We offer them to you in 3" pots and 6-pack plug containers ready to enter your gardens. We do not ship our plants; arrangements can be made for members to pick up from Two Creeks Farm or from a CSH designated pick-up location.

Consider joining us in our mission to protect and replant native medicinal plants by cultivating "At Risk" and "To Watch" plants in your landscape and gardens. Our medicinal plants and herbs are also available cut & sifted, and tinctured.

An Important Reminder

Ocimum basilicum Tall, uniform, and slow to bolt. Highly productive broadleaf popular for pesto.

O. basilicum Wonderful fragrance and distinctive cinnamon flavor make this variety especially suitable for tea or fruit salads. Violet stems, veining and lavender flower blooms are ornamental in the landscape as well as the vase. I love gardening near and with this aromatic plant; something happens when you enter its space.

Allium schoenoprasum Mild onion flavor when cut before blooming.

Dukat Anethum graveolens Aromatic never bitter or overly pungent this is the sweetest of dills. Delicate fragrance and has more volume to harvest than other dills.

Cymbopogon flexuosus Tropical perennial; temperate annual. Contains an inviting essential oil that has a scent of violets and lemon. Thai soup herb. Tea is anti-inflammatory. Can keep in container indoors or in the garden in a sunny and moist place.

Origanum heracleoticum Formerly known as Winter Marjoram in the 18th century, a strong oregno flavor; abundant fragrance in its leaves will season all manner of Italian dishes. Used as a tea for cold and flu symptoms.

Petroselinum crispum hortense Large dark green flat leaves have excellent flavor both fresh and dried. Parsley contains Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, C, D, calcium, chloride copper, iodine, iron, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, sulfur, & zinc. Whew! And that's not all; chewing a handful of parsley after indulging in a meal spiced with garlic will eliminate that particular lingering after dinner aroma that keeps us from getting to close to anyone.

Punica granatum An attractive tree that grows up to 5 m in height. Fruit matures in September and is primarily used for cardiovascular health due to its antioxidant actions and potential to prevent atherosclerosis as well as slow progression of atherosclerotic plaques. We have a limited quantity of pomegranate trees so please order early.

Sanguinaria canadensis An early blooming woodland perennial, juice is orange, leaves distinctly round-lobed; flowers white, to 2 in., with 8-10 petals appearing before or with leaves February-March. Traditionally used for rheumatism, asthma, bronchitis, lung ailments, laryngitis, fevers, and warts, bloodroot is on United Plant Savers "At-Risk" list.

Asclepias tuberosa Sun-loving perennial grows 1-3 ft. Leaves lance-shaped with showy orange flowers May-Sept. Tea or tincture of large, tuberous root once widely used for lung inflammation, asthma, and bronchitis. A root poultice is used for bruises, swellings, rheumatism and lameness. United Plant Savers asks us "To Watch" Asclepias.

Capsicum frutescens Commonly used in both food and medicinal products. Sapsaicin has anti-inflammatory properties and useful for painful and swollen joints and muscles.

Symphytum officinale Large-rooted perennial grows in full sun or part shade 1-3 ft. tall, with bell-like purple-blue, pink, or white flower clusters blooming in April-September. Used topically to promote healing of wounds, bruises, ulcers, sore breasts, cuts, and broken bones. This plant speeds healing and you must be careful not to use it on a wound that is infected as it will heal over the infection. You can actually sit and watch it grow!

Echinacea purpurea Blooms April-September and grows 2-3 ft. tall. It likes full sun but will tolerate part shade. Echinacea is an immune-stimulant, and its extract enhances the ability of our white blood cells to attack foreign particles such as cold or flu viruses. Also on United Plant Savers "At-Risk" list.

Inula helenium Perennial growing 4-8 ft. tall with "woolly" burdock-like leaves and large (4" across) yellow flowers. I use Inula in my cough syrup as it is particularly effective for chronic respiratory tract problems with associated digestive complaints, and is one of the few herbs specific for both systems. Other uses are for roundworm, threadworm, hookworm and whipworm infections.

Hydrastis canadensis Woodland perennial growing to 12" tall, flowers early spring, and produces one red seed berry. Likes 75% shade. Goldenseal is on the CITES Appendix II and United Plant Savers "At-Risk" lists, and would appreciate it if you were to consider helping it recover in your shade gardens. Hydrastis is specific for digestive tract disorders to include acid reflux, gastritis, IBS, diarrhea, and upsets due to E. coli, Giardia, and H. pylori bacteria.

Hyssopus officinalis Bushy, aromatic perennial 1-2 ft. tall with purple, bluish, or pink flowers in whorls on leaf axils forming small spikes. Traditionally used for stomachaches, loosen phlegm, and used with horehound for bronchitis, coughs, and asthma. Externally used to treat rheumatism, muscle aches, wounds and sprains.

Melissa officinalis 1-2 ft. tall perennials with whitish, inconspicuous flowers and round-toothed strongly lemon-scented leaves that have traditionally been used in folk remedies for fevers, headaches, colds, insomnia, mild sedative, and carminative.

Althaea officinalis Grows 2-5 ft. tall, leaves velvety, and flowers in clusters typically pale pink, 1 1/2" across. Roots and leaves are traditionally used in teas for sore throat and expectorant in bronchitis. Can be used externally for bruises, sprains, aching muscles and inflammations.

Chimaphila maculata spp. Umbellate A woodland perennial growing 6-12 in. tall, flowers whitish pink with a ring of red anthers; drooping, waxy. Listed "To-Watch" with United Plant Savers, pipsissewa has been overharvested and could use a little help in reviving itself. It is traditionally used as a diuretic, blood purifier, astringent, and in drops for sore eyes.

Urtica dioica Rarely noticed until you brush up against it. Fresh plants sting! Wearing gloves and long sleeves, harvest the leaves before it flowers in the spring and use fresh or dried for a tonic rich with vitamins and minerals. It is used as a blood purifier and builder, diuretic, astringent, and for anemia, gout, rheumatism, and poor circulation. It makes a fine tea blended with red clover and lemon balm which may build bone density.

Collinsonia canadensis Grows native on the north slope at Two Creeks and is listed "To-Watch" with United Plant Savers. Also known as Horse-Balm, it grows 2-4 ft. tall, flowers yellow to whitish in dense, usually continuous spikes in July-September. Lesser known but very important herb because of its unique activity as a non-toxic and effective vascular tonic.

Asarum canadense A creeping perennial with heart shaped leaves; flowers maroon, urn-shaped with 3" petals. Loves shade and the root is strongly aromatic; . Traditionally it is a valued root tea for indigestion, coughs, colds, heart conditions, "female ailments", throat ailments, nervous conditions and cramps.
